In the first ten minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure start to rise. Between the next 15 to 45 minutes, the stimulant keeps you alert and prompts to improve your concentration levels.

‘Red Bull has a pH of 3.3, which is the same as vinegar—combined with sugar, therefore making a perfect mixture for eroding the enamel on teeth and causing a lifetime of dental problems.

‘Whereas moderate coffee consumption has been linked to longer life, this is certainly not the case for energy drinks.

And while caffeine can make us feel more alert and awake, it does not make us smarter. Some research shows that caffeine impairs the ability to think creatively.’

‘Coffee and tea are a far better way to go to get caffeine. Although everything in moderation, of course!’

At some time during the first 15-45 minutes, depending on how fast you drink it, the stages of caffeine will reach the highest point, and you’ll feel alert.

Dr. Farrimond said: ‘After drinking a caffeinated drink, caffeine passes from the intestines into the blood then into the brain and around the body.

‘It is a stimulant drug that works by slowing the ‘tiredness signals’ in the brain. The chemical adenosine in the brain has a vital role in how tired we feel – it tends to build up throughout the day and causes us to get sleepy in the evening.

Caffeine is a drug that temporarily blocks the adenosine pathways, giving you a boost and allowing ‘feel good’ molecules in the brain (like dopamine) to be released more readily. You feel more alert, and you feel better about yourself!

30-50 minutes: After you finish your drink and the caffeine has fully absorbed by your body, your liver will often then react by absorbing more sugar. During this time, your body has absorbed most of the sugar in the drink as well.

By 50 minutes, the caffeine is not fully absorbed the caffeine, and your liver also starts taking in more sugar. Then when the one-hour mark hits, this is when you will experience a sugar crash.

Dr. Farrimond said: ‘Ordinarily all the caffeine to be absorbed by about 45 minutes after drinking, although if drunk as part of a meal it could be longer.”

“The liver breaks down caffeine and caffeine and does indeed raise blood sugar levels. It’s not as straightforward, however.”

‘In diabetics, Caffeine can make low blood sugars worse, for example. Caffeine seems to be good for the liver, and coffee consumption has been linked to lower liver disease rates and liver cancer. But the same has not shown for energy drinks.’

60 minutes: You’ll likely be getting the ‘sugar crash,’ this often is the sugar levels in your bloodstream dropping and the effects of the caffeine dying down.

Dr. Farrimond said: ‘Many scientists don’t think the ‘sugar crash’ truly exists. We think we can tell when our sugar levels are high or low, but we usually can’t.’

“Eating a meal can make us feel tired for different reasons, and we do get the comedown from caffeine, which can start around this time. We can also feel a slump when the ‘happy hormones in our brain start to wear off.’

In the next five to six hours, our body reduces caffeine’s content in the bloodstream by half. It takes 12 hours for all of the caffeine to be removed from the body.

Five to six hours: is the half-life of caffeine. It takes this long for your body to reduce your bloodstream’s caffeine content by only 50%. For women on an oral contraceptive, this time is doubled.

Dr. Farrimond said: For normal-weight adults, this is accurate. The oral contraceptive pill makes the half-life longer; although it may not be double, it depends on the precise tablet.

‘Liver damage, pregnancy, and other drugs can slow the rate at which caffeine is eliminated from the body.’

‘Even more importantly, children and teenagers have a significantly longer half-life, meaning caffeine will remain in their bloodstream longer and at higher levels than for adults. This is why caffeinated drinks can cause anxiety issues and behavioral problems in children.’

12 hours: For most people, 12 hours after finishing your energy drink, all the caffeine will have been gone from your bloodstream. The exact speed of time will vary for each person.

Dr. Farrimond said: ‘Yes, that is a fair approximation, excluding children and teenagers.

12 to 24 hours: For regular caffeine drinkers, between 12 and 24 hours is when you’ll start to feel withdrawal symptoms, i.e., the urge for some caffeine; other effects of this include irritability, headaches, and constipation.

Dr. Farrimond said: ‘Caffeine withdrawal symptoms are overstated, usually, and aren’t as bad as think they are.

‘In blinded tests where coffee drinkers have their caffeinated drinks changed for decaffeinated ones, the withdrawal effects were found to be pretty mild in most cases, if they exist at all.

Withdrawal symptoms can last up to nine days and depend on the amount of caffeine we drink. Everyone’s different, but a lot of the ‘withdrawal’ symptoms seem to be in our mind.’

Your body needs seven to 12 days to become tolerant to caffeine.

Seven to 12 days: Studies show that this is how long it takes your body to become tolerant to your daily caffeine intake. One study found those who took a caffeine pill while the others took a placebo did show similar alert levels, moods, and energy after 18 days. Those who had a high dosage of caffeine had got used to the caffeine fix.

Dr. Farrimond said: ‘We become tolerant to caffeine, needing more to get the same effect.’

Most things are okay in moderation and as part of a healthy balanced diet, which applies to energy drinks. However, be careful as often large amounts of sugar are in many of these drinks.
